A Happy Memorial Day to you all! Make sure to thank a veteran today, and don’t forget what this day is all about. I’d like to thank my own father for his service in the Air Force. Although he never was involved in war and can’t join a VFW (which he is kinda pissed about to this day) I still consider him a veteran and thank him for all he has done.

Today was another awesome run. I woke up at 9am today before my alarm and loafed around in bed. I was planning on getting up around 10 and then heading to the gym, but thanks to a good friend of mine on Facebook for posting about his early morning run, I got the motivation to get up and put on my gym attire. (Hello run on sentence!) My calves and hammies were a bit tight from my workout yesterday, but I was certain it was something I could shake out.

Hmm….some one needs to wipe down the mirror at my gym…

Before my run I ate a banana and my Clif Shot gel in mocha. I love these for pre-run fuel. They sit well in my stomach and are each to inhale before I head out the door. This flavor was a bit thinner than the normal Chocolate  I get, but I liked it. The kick of caffeine didn’t seem to affect me adversely so I believe I may get a box of these when I deplete my stash I already have. 🙂

I used the towel trick again today and it totally worked like a charm. It makes the runs go by so much quicker not knowing how far along I am. The only thing I hate is that I can’t control when the machine goes into cool down, so I get a little freaked out when it suddenly slows down and I have to stop the machine and restart to go another .6 miles (grr.). The whole run was pretty good. Towards the end my right hip flexor gave me a bit of grief so I knew I was going to have to do a bit more of a cool down and some stretching afterwards. All in all though, it was great. I felt like I could have done more, and was considering doing 4 miles, but then I talked myself out of it when my hip started to bug me. Better to be smart now than not running later! Plus, I have plenty more weeks of running 3.5+ miles to look forward to, so I need to enjoy these short runs while I can.

Stretching afterwards felt AMAZING. I normally don’t stretch (I know, I know ….look in shame), but this time I KNEW I had too. I spent about 15 minutes just focusing solely on loosening my hip and inner thigh up and boy did it feel great afterwards. I’m going to take a shower and throw on my compression shorts for added measure.

Speaking of stretching, I wanted to share some of my favorite “cool down” music. As you know, I’m a huge gamer. I love the Skyrim soundtrack for warming down. The music is just so calming and most of the tracks are a bit longer than usual. I personally enjoy these two the most;

I felt completely refreshed as I left the gym. Maybe I need to do this whole stretching thing more often? 😉

After the gym I came home and showered, then headed right back out to hit up REI. My mom had a pair of shoes that needed returned so I volunteered. I had never been to the actual store and was curious. It was like a candy store.

I was tempted to buy so many things, but I kept to my original plan of looking for The Stick. I am completely uncoordinated so a foam roller was just simply out of the question. I was actually able to find the 42″ marathon stick which I got for 36 bucks on the 20% sale. I used it when I got home and it hurt soooooooo good. I sticked out my hip flexor and oohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh myyyyyy. How have I lived without rolling out my muscles? This I’m hoping will turn out to be very beneficial in the long run.

Across the mall was one of my favorite places to hit up, Ross.

No deals, sadly. Least nothing I was too interested in. They never seem to have Nike, sad face.

Then I came home and ate half a watermelon.

It is absolutely insanely hot here in PA. It was 90 degrees out and my car almost didn’t start up twice due to the heat. Good grief, I’m not even sure if I would have survived out in the heat at a picnic today!
